PFAS Compliance & Reporting Software

Understanding the PFAS Challenge

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals valued for their extraordinary resilience—and increasingly scrutinized because of it. Resistant to heat, water, and chemical degradation, PFAS persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms. Without proactive mitigation, researchers estimate that up to 4.4 million tons of PFAS could be released into the environment over the next 30 years, posing growing risks to public health, biodiversity, and corporate accountability.

Why Industry Has Relied on PFAS

PFAS have been integral to industrial innovation for decades due to their unique performance characteristics. Here's why they’ve been so widely used:

Property

Why It Matters

Typical Applications

Chemical stability

Performs under extreme pH and temperature

Industrial seals, gaskets

Water / oil repellence

Prevents staining and moisture retention

Non-stick cookware, stain-resistant textiles, waterproof apparel

Fire resistance

Enables rapid flame suppression

Firefighting foams (AFFF)

High-temperature tolerance

Maintains function under heat stress

Semiconductor manufacturing, insulation in electronics

Low friction

Enhances mechanical efficiency

Aerospace and automotive components

Electrical insulation

Prevents short circuits and leakage

Circuit boards, high-performance cables

Global Regulatory Momentum

Regulatory authorities worldwide are intensifying their focus on PFAS. Keeping pace with this evolving landscape is now a strategic necessity.

United States

  • TSCA § 8(a)(7): Requires manufacturers and importers to report PFAS data (including historical use dating back to January 1, 2011).
  • State-level action:
    • Maine: Comprehensive phase-out of intentionally added PFAS across all product categories.
    • Minnesota: Broad PFAS restrictions begin in 2025, with a full ban by 2032.
    • New Mexico: Passed the PFAS Protection Act (HB 212) on April 8, 2025, becoming the third U.S. state to broadly restrict PFAS in products.
    • California, New York, Washington, Vermont, Colorado: Active legislation in progress targeting PFAS in consumer goods and industrial uses.

European Union

  • REACH Universal PFAS Restriction (Draft): A proposal to ban approximately 12,000 PFAS substances, including fluoropolymers. The regulation includes transitional periods and could extend restrictions as far as 2039.
  • Companies must track multiple implementation deadlines and exceptions across member states.

The message is clear: what was once an emerging issue is now a top-tier compliance challenge.
