France Battery EPR (REP) Compliance Service
France’s Extended Producer Responsibility for batteries (REP “batteries”) requires companies placing batteries on the French market to finance and organise collection and treatment through an approved compliance route.
From 18 August 2025, France applies the EU-aligned battery framework covering five battery categories and approved compliance operators.
📌 Who must comply
You generally fall under REP if you place batteries (or products containing batteries) on the French market as a manufacturer, importer, or brand owner.
The “producer” is the entity that puts the products on the market for France, and this status is central to IDU/SYDEREP obligations.
🔋 Batteries in scope
France’s battery REP aligns with the expanded scope from 18 Aug 2025, covering five categories such as portable, LMT (light means of transport), SLI, industrial, and EV batteries (definitions and detailed scope rules apply).
✅ What you must do (France battery REP)
1) Choose your compliance route
You must either:
- Join an approved eco-organism, or
- Operate an approved individual system (where applicable).
2) Join an approved eco-organism (most common route)
France lists approved eco-organisms for batteries under the current framework, including ECOSYSTEM and BATRIBOX, and Recycler Mon Véhicule for the EV category.
3) Obtain and manage your IDU (SYDEREP)
REP companies must obtain an Identifiant Unique (IDU) after joining an eco-organism (or creating an individual system). The IDU evidences registration and is part of France’s REP control system via SYDEREP.
4) Ensure take-back works in practice
Distributors must take back used portable and automotive batteries free of charge and without purchase obligation, and inform users about take-back in-store.
5) Keep compliance records and proof
Maintain contracts/approvals, product classification logic, sales/import evidence, and submission archives to support declarations and audits (requirements vary by route and operator).
🧾 Reporting duties
Typical ongoing duties include:
- Placed-on-market declarations (quantities put on the market), generally via your eco-organism; for approved individual systems, reporting may run via SYDEREP.
- IDU communication in required business contexts (and providing it when requested).
- Annual cadence is common for REP declarations (exact format and deadlines depend on your eco-organism/approval conditions).
🧬 Traceability checklist
Use a simple, repeatable traceability model:
- SKU → battery category (portable/LMT/SLI/industrial/EV)
- Period → quantities placed on market (units/weight as required)
- Declaration → source evidence (sales/import data, BOM/tech specs, calculation file, submission export)
🧩 What this service includes
- 📝 Scope & classification: map products to the correct battery category and document assumptions.
- 🏷️ Eco-organism onboarding support: prepare datasets and compliance documents for membership and setup.
- 🆔 IDU/SYDEREP readiness: organise required information flows and ensure IDU governance in commercial operations.
- 🧾 Reporting workflow: data capture → validation → submission → archiving with a complete evidence trail.
