The EU Parliament just passed new laws to make batteries better and more eco-friendly. These rules cover everything from how batteries are made to how they're thrown away.

Many of obligations will be due after only one or two year like:

Date: 28 July 2023 ➡️ Action: This Regulation shall enter into force

Date: 18 February 2024 ➡️ Action: This Regulation shall apply

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: CE Marking

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: EU declaration of conformity

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Economic operator’s responsibilities and obligations

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Technical documentation for stationary battery energy storage systems

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: The state of health and expected lifetime of batteries as set out in Annex VII shall be contained in the battery management system of stationary battery energy storage systems, LMT batteries, and electric vehicle batteries.

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Portable batteries, whether or not incorporated into appliances, shall not contain more than 0.01% of lead (expressed as lead metal) by weight. The restriction set out in point 1 shall not apply to portable zinc-air button cells until 18 August 2028

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Conformity assessment procedures "Module A" and (obligations to economic operators except waste management and due diligence obligations) shall apply, except for Module D1 and Module G, which applies from 4th July 2025

Date: 12 months after the date of the first publication of the list of notified bodies ➡️ Action: Module D1 and Module G

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Obligation to apply award criteria for procurement procedures

Date: 18 August 2024 ➡️ Action: Rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh, LMT batteries, and electric vehicle batteries shall be accompanied by a document containing values for the electrochemical performance and durability parameters. That shall contain an explanation of the technical specifications, standards, and conditions used to measure, calculate or estimate the values for the electrochemical performance and durability parameters.

Date: 18 February 2025 ➡️ Action: The carbon footprint declaration shall apply for Electric vehicle batteries

Date: 18 August 2025 ➡️ Action: Economic operators that place batteries on the market or put them into service shall fulfill the due diligence obligation

Date: 18 February 2025 ➡️ Action: Commission to adopt a delegated act to establish the methodology for calculation and verification of rates for recycling efficiency

Date: 18 August 2025 ➡️ Action: Directive 2006/66/EC is repealed

Date: 18 August 2025 ➡️ Action: Management of waste batteries
