PFAS Compliance

PFAS Compliance

The Problem with PFAS

PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals known for their persistence in the environment and potential risks to human health, plants, and animals. Without action, an estimated 4.4 million tons of PFAS could end up in the environment over the next 30 years.

Importance of PFAS

PFAS are widely used due to their unique properties:

  • Chemical Stability: Resist degradation under extreme conditions.
  • Water and Stain Resistance: Ideal for non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and waterproof clothing.
  • Fire Resistance: Utilized in firefighting foams.
  • Temperature Resistance: Suitable for high-temperature applications in electronics.
  • Lubrication: Used in aerospace and automotive parts.
  • Electrical Insulation: Valuable as electrical insulators in various electronic components.

Uses of PFAS

PFAS are found in numerous products, including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, waterproof clothing, food packaging, firefighting foams, electronics, aviation and automotive parts, metal plating, paints, and cleaning products.

Key PFAS Regulations

USA Regulations

  2. Maine: ban of any products containing intentionally added PFAS.
  3. Minnesota: Bans on many products with PFAS starting in 2025, with a complete ban by 2032.
  4. Many other states are on their way to similar regulations.

EU Regulations

  1. REACH Restrictions: A comprehensive ban on approximately 12,000 PFAS substances, including fluoropolymers, expected by 2039.
