Key points to know about the Electrical and Electronic Waste (WEEE) Directive to reduce e-waste
Electrical and Electronic Waste Directive (Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) is an EU legislation aimed at reducing the negative environmental impact of e-waste. Here are some key points you need to know about WEEE guidance:
EEE categories covered by WEEE:
- heat exchange equipment.
- screens, screens, and equipment containing screens that have a surface greater than 100 cm2.
- bulbs.
- large equipment (i.e. external dimensions more than 50 cm).
- Small equipment (external dimension not more than 50 cm).
- Small ICT equipment (not exceeding the dimension outer 50 cm).
WEEE's Directive Objectives:
- Producers must register with the national regulatory authorities of each EU country where the product is sold and report sales volumes for each type of product.
- Producers must arrange or participate in a system to collect EEE at the end of life in order to recover, re- Use, recycling goals.
- EEE must be marked with a cross trash can icon.
- Producers must meet WEEE's recovery, reuse, and recycling targets.
Recoverability, reusability and recycling objectives for WEEE:
- For electrical and electronic equipment falling under category 1 or 4 of Annex III, 85 per cent is recovered, and 80 per cent are prepared for reuse and recycling.
- For electrical and electronic equipment under Annex III, category 2, 80 per cent is recovered, and 70 per cent is prepared for reuse and recycling.
- For electrical and electronic equipment in category 5 or 6 of annex III, 75 per cent is recovered and 55 per cent is prepared for reuse and recycling.
- For electrical and electronic equipment under Annex III, category 3, 80 per cent of them are recycled.
