Important information on the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive to reduce e-waste
The WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) is an EU directive that aims to reduce the negative impact of e-waste on the environment. Here are some key points about the WEEE Directive:
Categories of WEEE:
- temperature exchange equipment.
- Screens, monitors and devices containing screens with a surface area of more than 100 cm2.
- lamps.
- Large equipment (each external dimension more than 50 cm).
- Small equipment (no external dimensions more than 50 cm).
- Small IT and telecommunications equipment (no external dimensions of more than 50 cm).
Objectives of the WEEE Directive:
- Manufacturers must register with the national regulatory authorities in each EU country where the product is sold and report the sales volumes of each product type.
- Manufacturers must establish or participate in an end-of-life collection system for recyclability, reusability and recyclability.
- Electrical appliances must be marked with a symbol of the crossed-out trash can.
- Manufacturers must meet the recyclability, reuse and recyclability targets of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
Recyclability, reusability and recyclability of WEEE:
- For waste electrical and electronic equipment in category 1 or 4 of Annex III, 85 % shall be recovered and 80 % shall be prepared for reuse and recycled.
- For WEEE in category 2 of Annex III, 80 % shall be recovered and 70 % shall be prepared for reuse and recycling.
- For waste electrical and electronic equipment in category 5 or 6 of Annex III, 75 % shall be recovered and 55 % shall be prepared for re-use and recycled.
- For WEEE in category 3 of Annex III, 80 % shall be recycled.
