The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) is an EU law that restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). The following substances are restricted:

• Lead (0.1%)
• Mercury (0.1%)
• Cadmium (0.01%)
• Hexavalent Chrome (0.1%)
• Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) (0.1%)
• Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (0.1%)
• Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (0.1%)
• Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) (0.1%)
• Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0.1%)
• Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0.1%)

RoHS applies to the following categories of EEE:

1. Major Appliances
2. Small Appliances
3. Computer and Telecommunications Equipment
4. Consumer Devices
5. Lighting Equipment
6. Power and Electronic Tools
7. Toys, Leisure and Sports Equipment
8. Medical Devices
9. Monitoring and control instruments, including industrial monitoring and control instruments
10. Vending machines
11. Other EEE not covered by the above categories

All products with an electrical or electronic component must comply with these restrictions, unless expressly excluded. 
Products impacted by the RoHS Directive must bear the CE mark to comply with the RoHS obligations.
