Protecting the environment and human health of persistent organic pollutants: an overview of Complymarket regulation and solutions

Persistent organic pollutants (POP) are organic substances that persist in the environment, accumulate in living organisms and present risks for both human health and the environment. These substances can be transported across international borders by air, water or migratory species, reaching regions where they have never occurred or used. Effective international risk management is necessary, since no region can manage the risks that these substances present.

There are four substance lists that are regulated under pop:

  • Annex I: Pop whose manufacturing, marketing or use is prohibited.
  • Annex II: Pop whose manufacturing, marketing or use is severely restricted.
  • ANNEX III: POP that arise as unintentional by -products of industrial processes and are subject to measures to reduce their release.
  • Annex IV: Pop that are subject to special waste management measures.
