Protecting the Environment and Human Health from Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS): General view of arrangement and complymarket solutions

Continuous organic pollutants (POPS) are organic substances that constantly exist in the environment, accumulate in living organisms and pose a risk for both human health and the environment. These substances can exceed international boundaries through air, water or immigrant species, perhaps access to areas where they are not produced or used at all. A single region for the management of the risks caused by these substances cannot manage the risks caused by these substances alone.

There are four lists of articles under Pops:

  • Appendix I: The substances in which the production, market or use of POPs is prohibited.
  • Appendix II: The substances in which the production, market or use of POPs is seriously restricted.
  • Annex III: POPs that emerge as unwanted by -products of industrial processes and are subject to reducing release.
  • Appendix IV: POPs that are subject to special waste management measures.
