Protects the environment and human health from Persistent Organic Pollutants: Review of Regulations and Complymarket Solutions

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) is an organic matter that is permanent in the environment, accumulates in living organisms, and poses a risk to human and environmental health. These materials can be transported across the international border through air, water, or migration species, reaching areas where they may never be produced or used. Effective international risk management is needed as no region can manage the risks brought by these materials.

There are four lists of materials arranged under Pops:

  • Appendix I: Pops whose production, its placement in the market, or its use is prohibited.
  • Appendix II: Pops whose production, its placement in the market, or its use is limited.
  • Appendix III: POPS that emerges as an unwanted side product from the industry process and is subject to measures to reduce emissions.
  • Appendix IV: POPS subject to special waste management measures.
