Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic substances that remain in the environment, accumulate in living organisms, and pose a risk to human health and the environment. These materials can be transported across international borders by air, water, or migratory species, reaching areas where they may never have been produced or used. There are four lists of substances organized under POPs:

• Annex III: POPs that appear as by-products are not desirable from industrial processes and are subject to measures to reduce emissions.
• Annex IV: POPs that are subject to special waste management measures.
