Combating Waste and Toxicity in Vehicles within the Framework of the ELV Directive: Objectives and Requirements of the ELV Directive
The ELV Directive prohibits the use of hazardous substances in new vehicles, while setting targets for reuse, recycling and recovery of ELVs and their components. This includes restricted metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, allowing exemptions where there are no alternatives. Exemptions are detailed in Annex II of the Directive.
Objectives of the ELV Directive:
- Limiting and preventing waste from ELVs and their components
- Improving environmental performance in the life cycle of vehicles
According to the ELV Directive, restricted metals are:
- Lead: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Mercury: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Chrome VI: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Cadmium: 0.01% (100 ppm)
These limitations apply to homogeneous materials.
