Addressing Waste and Toxicity in Vehicles: Goals and Requirements of the ELV Directive
The ELV directive sets targets for the reuse, recycling, and restoration of End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) and their components, while prohibiting the use of hazardous materials in new vehicles. These include restricted metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, with exceptions for cases where there is no alternative. This exception is described in detail in Annex II of the Directive.
ELV Directive Objectives:
- Restrict and prevent the rest of the ELV and its components
- Improving environmental performance in vehicle life cycle
Limited metals according to the ELV Directive:
- Lead: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Mercury: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Chromium VI: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Cadmium: 0.01% (100 ppm)
This limit applies to homogeneous materials.
