Addressing waste and toxicity in vehicles: ELV's directive goals and requirements
The ELV directive sets targets to reuse, recycle, and restore the end -life vehicle (ELV) and its components, while prohibiting the use of hazardous materials in new vehicles. These include limited metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalen chromium, with the exception of cases where there are no alternatives. This exception is described in detail in Appendix II Directive.
Elv Directive Objectives:
- Limit and prevent waste from the ELV and its components
- Improve environmental performance in vehicle life cycle
Limited metal according to Elv Directive:
- Lead: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Mercury: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Chromium VI: 0.1% (1000 ppm)
- Cadmium: 0.01% (100 ppm)
This limit is applied to homogeneous materials.
