The Weee Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) is an EU legislation that aims to reduce the negative environmental impact of electronic waste. Here are some key points you have to know about the Weee Directive:

AEE categories covered by the Weee:

  1. Thermal exchange equipment.
  2. Screens, monitors and equipment containing surface screens greater than 100 cm2.
  3. Lamps.
  4. Large equipment (any external size greater than 50 cm).
  5. Small equipment (no external size greater than 50 cm).
  6. Small IT and telecommunication equipment (no external size greater than 50 cm).

Objectives of the Weee Directive:

  • The producers must register with the national regulation authorities of each EU country where the product is sold and communicate the sales volumes of each type of product.
  • Manufacturers must prepare or participate in an AEE collection system at the end of their life cycle for the objectives of recovering, reusability and recyclability.
  • EEE must be marked with a symbol of the barrato basket.
  • Manufacturers must satisfy the objectives of recovering, reusability and recyclability of the Weee.

Objectives for recovering, reusability and recyclability of the Weee:

  • For the Wees referred to in Annex III, category 1 or 4, 85% must be recovered and 80% must be prepared for reuse and recycled.
  • For the Wees that fall into category 2 of Annex III, 80% must be recovered and 70% must be prepared for reuse and recycled.
  • For the Wees referred to in Annex III, category 5 or 6, 75% must be recovered and 55% must be prepared for reuse and recycled.
  • For the Weee that fall into category 3 of Annex III, 80% must be recycled.
