Key Things to Know about the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive to Reduce E Waste
The WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) is an EU legislation aimed at reducing the negative environmental impact of electronic waste. Here are some important things you need to know about the WEEE Directive:
EEE categories protected by WEEE:
- Temperature exchange equipment.
- Screens, monitors and equipment containing screens that have a surface of more than 100 cm2.
- Lampu.
- Large equipment (any external dimensions more than 50 cm).
- Small equipment (no external dimensions exceeding 50 cm).
- Small IT and telecommunications equipment (no external dimensions exceeding 50 cm).
WEEE Directive Targets:
- The manufacturer must register with the national regulatory authority in each EU country where the product is sold and report the total sales of each type of product.
- Manufacturers must organize or participate in a system to collect EEE at the end of life for recoverability, reusability, and recyclability targets.
- EEE must be marked with the barred bin symbol.
- Manufacturers must meet the targets of recyclability, reusability and recyclability of WEEE.
WEEE recoverability, reusability and recyclability targets:
- For WEEE that falls under category 1 or 4 of Annex III, 85% will be restored, and 80% will be made available for reuse and recycling.
- For WEEE that falls under category 2 of Annex III, 80% will be restored, and 70% will be made available for reuse and recycling.
- For WEEE that falls under category 5 or 6 of Annex III, 75% will be restored, and 55% will be made available for reuse and recycling.
- For WEEE that falls under category 3 of Annex III, 80% should be recycled.
